At Chetâs office, his receptionist, Carla, told me Chet had finished his report on Millieâs Boarding House.
The lawyer came out. âWe maintain a small private room for our clients to review documents. Afterwards, if you need to, we can talk.â He showed me the way.
I went in, dropped the documents on the table and sat down.
Carla brought in a tray with a carafe of coffee, a cup, and the fixings along with a blueberry scone. I poured coffee and started reviewing the recorded chain on Millieâs property. She bought it in an escrow closing a little over thirty-one years ago. I made a mental note of the name of the couple who sold her the property. The name was unfamiliar, but it could become significant as I learned more. In the margin of the second page was a handwritten note in light pencil: SEE ME. I figured that to be Chetâs note. Iâd ask him about it after I finished going through everything.
Since the transaction in which Millie acquired the property, the history was clean. No sale after Millie bought it. There was a deed of trust recorded some twenty years ago showing the bank as the beneficiary. A darker written pencil notation in the margin read: MILLIE OBTAINED A CREDIT LINE AT THE BANK FOR REPAIRS AND UPDATES. BEFORE THAT THE PROPERTY WAS FREE AND CLEAR. SHE PAID OFF THE CREDIT LINE THE FOLLOWING YEAR. ITâS BEEN DEBT FREE SINCE.
I pushed the real estate history inside the envelope from the title company that issued the preliminary title report. After chugging down the last of my coffee, I refilled the cup and used my phone to access my account in Autumnâs company. After entering my user and password I opened the progress report on the surveillance of Vance Jones.
His movements around San Francisco seemed innocent. He went to several meetings and attended a luncheon. Without audio surveillance or video adequate for lipreading, I had no idea if he was doing lawyering work or planning a bank robbery. In the evening, he went to an address which wasnât his home. Heâs unmarried as is the woman who owned the property where he went. He came out several hours later, went home, parked in his garage, and went in for the night.
After starting to get up to ask Carla if I could get in to see Chet, I sat back down and dialed Autumn in San Francisco.
âHello, Rickie, baby. The surveillance was most of one day and that night, but there wasnât much there.â
âI agree. Without audio, it was unlikely weâd get anything juicy unless he was meeting with someone whose picture hangs in the post office. If Iâm interpreting correctly whatâs on your website, heâs made no calls since you got your portable cell tower set up.â
âYou think this Vance Jones is your killer?â
âI canât shake the thought that Vance Jones is pivotal, but I donât see him as a killer, at least not hands-on. His only brother was killed in Syria.
